The Palm Tree
"What's your favourite tree?"
"Easy, a big, tall Palm Tree. I think it's pretty common for people like me, born in environments that don't naturally grow them. They remind you of better days & less worry"
That was what my friend Justin said when I asked him what his favourite tree was. I was impressed by the answer, I never thought about it that way. At the time, we were staying in his family's cottage in Northern Ontario. Summer at any cottage in Canada, usually embodies the same setting. You're surrounded by tall Spruce trees, the lake to cool off in, and a cooler full of beers on the dock. When Justin answered with "Palm tree", I pulled up a few pictures of Palm Trees that I had taken over the years.
The last time I was surrounded by palm trees daily, was during my annual trip to Costa Rica. My dad lives in the jungles of Zancudo, a hidden gem on the Pacific Coast, just above Panama at the southern most part of Costa Rica. Its beaches are sprawling and the palm trees are magnificent.

I realized what palms meant to me after more thought...
One day, I was snapping hundreds of pictures of palm tress. Being so close to the equator, golden hour in Zancudo is around 5 pm - 6 pm. On this day, the light Ocean breeze made the trees oscillate as the light danced off the leaves. It was easy to capture amazing pictures.
Standing in the shadow of the palms, as my brother was having a Cerveza on the patio beside me, I turned to him and said "Something about palms eh, I'm just in a better mood when they're all around". He agreed and carried on with his Pint while choosing from our go-to Vacation Playlist.
The realization I had about these trees is not something new, most of my friends agree when I bring it up, or when I ask what their favourite tree is. But, what stood out to me was the energy they gave me the rest of the trip. They symbolized what I was there to do; enjoy each day from sunrise to sleep, be more still than when I'm back home, and just go with the flow...oscillate. The next time you stand surrounded by tall palms in a warm climate, take a moment and think about why we're drawn to them and why you're on that trip. For me, it was too enjoy the moment and follow through on why I took a vacation.
